bretac's birth November 4th 2010

ok everyone here's the scoop!

i went to bed around midnight. Teal'c woke me up several times i had been up with him at 3 am and had just laid him back down in his swing at about 325. my first contraction hit me around then. i hadn't had any during the day but i did have alot of pelvic pain and pressure. i thought i maybe had a bladder infection and planned to get it checked out at my appointment on Friday.

the contraction felt so strong it was almost like getting hit with a truck from behind. it surprised me greatly. i could still walk thru them and so i paced the living room to see if i would have another...after 3 of them at 2 minutes apart i went to the bathroom and noticed i was leaking some pink tinged fluid.
i went in and woke up rob. i wasn't expecting things to happen so fast so i told him he could go back to sleep for a hour because we had been up so late and he hadn't slept much in 2 days. he said "NO! were going." when he saw me double over in pain with the next contraction.
Rob called his mom while i got dressed. we emailed a few people to tell them our schedule for the day had changed (Teal'c was supposed to have therapy and WIC today and Rob was supposed to have a test.)
during that time (about 15 minutes) the contractions got worse. by the time Jan walked in i could no longer walk thru the contractions and bent over moaning with each one.
i got into the car and got the shivers. i thought because it was cold outside, but i was shaking so badly and couldn't control it. Rob turned up the heat and asked if he should call 911. i said no lets drive. i didn't think it was possible that labor could go so quickly.
Rob called the hospital to let them know we were coming but while he was on the phone i coudln't stop screaming. the pain was so bad and the contractions were right on top of eachother i screamed for rob to pull over because i felt baby pressing. rob hung up with the hospital and called 911 told them to meet us on the way.
we were at Castle Danger (about 10 min from home) he pulled over and helped me into the middle seat in the van. he helped me get my pants off and i tried to hold baby in until the ambulance would arrive, but after 2 contractions the urge to push was to overwhelming and i couldn't' stop it. i screamed "he's coming NOW" and rob looked down to see baby's head crowning. Rob reassured me that he had him and i pushed only once and he was out.
Bretac came out purple but otherwise looking good. he cried a little and rob put him on my belly to keep warm. we had only a small baby blanket in the car and covered him while i rubbed his back to get him breathing regularly.
the cop and the first responder arrived first, about 5 minutes after baby was born. we were still on the phone with 911. they told rob to tie off the cord. all we had in the van was an old rope...so that's what we used. we had nothing to cut it with so we just tied it.
the cop and the first responder were more befuddled than anything. they didn't know what to do. Rob had the situation more in controll than they did. lol. the cop had a blanket in his car and wrapped the baby up in it. the ambulance arrived about 5 minutes later (10 minutes after the baby was born) they put some pads under me and the placenta came out. that thing was about as big or bigger than the baby!
baby was getting hypothermic so they got us wrapped up and in the ambulance as quickly as possible and took us to Two harbors the nearest hospital. Rob drove the car behind us.
we were at Two harbors about 2 hours maybe 3 before they transferred us to Duluth (they don't have the equipment to handle births and new borns at two harbors) they made sure we were stable before transfer.
it took a few hours under warming lights for baby to beable to maintain his own temperature and he started nursing right away which helped alot. his blood sugars were fluctuating quite a bit at first but everything settled down and he's doing great.
he weighs in at 6lbs 5 oz and 19 inches long.

it was a scary, eventfull and very quick labor!! were thanking God for us both being safe and healthy. and what an amazing story! were the talk of the whole floor up here. lol.

here's Rob's take on what happend
